Personal profile

Since October 1, 2012, Prof. Dr. Clemens Hoffmann has headed the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology IEE (formerly Fraunhofer IWES) in Kassel. At the same time he holds a chair at the University of Kassel.

The physicist studied at the University of Hamburg and received his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching, where he subsequently worked in the field of controlled nuclear fusion. From 1995 he was responsible for the project »Electronic Engine Controls« at Siemens AG and later for the competence field Localization Systems. During this time, he developed a new method for the automatic tuning of combustion engines and invented a new method for localizing users in a mobile radio network.

Hoffmann has been involved in renewable energies since 2004, when he took the lead in expanding the focus on such for Siemens. Five years later, he became head of the cross-sector »Smart Grid« lighthouse project at Siemens Corporate Technology.

His most important successes include the establishment of a Smart Grid Test Center, the development of a 100 percent supply scenario, and the invention and prototypical implementation of a self-organizing energy automation system.

Prior to joining Fraunhofer in 2012, the Hamburg-born engineer spent two years as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Siemens »Smart Grid« project. In this function, he shaped the innovation strategy in this area, headed global research and development, and influenced national and international legislation, regulations, and standardization.
